Admiral Tom Fargo, USN (Ret.), to Receive 2022 Lone Sailor Award

The United States Navy Memorial will present United States Navy and corporate business leader, Admiral Thomas “Tom” B. Fargo, with the 2022 Lone Sailor Award at the 2022 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner on September 22, 2022.

The Lone Sailor Award is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective careers during or after their service.

“Admiral Fargo’s leadership at the highest levels of the United States Navy, the Department of Defense and American business will have a lasting impact for decades to come,” said retired Rear Admiral Frank Thorp, President & CEO of the US Navy Memorial. “And his leadership has set an example that will be emulated for even longer.”

Admiral Fargo served as Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command from 2002 to 2005. As the senior U.S. military commander in East Asia, the Pacific and Indian Ocean areas, Admiral Fargo led the largest unified command while directing the joint operations of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force across 100 million square miles.

Prior to serving as Commander of US Pacific Command, Admiral Fargo served as the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet from October 1999 to May 2002. His service as a leader in the Pacific was preceded by his command of the U.S. Fifth Fleet and Naval Forces of the Central Command during two years of Iraqi contingency operations from July 1996 to July 1998. His 35 years of service included five commands in the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Middle East as well as six tours in Washington, DC.

Following a distinguished career serving the U.S. Navy and the Department of Defense, Admiral Fargo transitioned to corporate leadership in March 2005, as President of Trex Enterprises, a privately held high technology company. In April 2008, he became a Managing Director of J.F. Lehman and Co, with principal responsibilities as President and CEO of HSF Holdings/Hawaii Superferry. He held the John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies at the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) from 2009 to 2016.

From 2006 to 2021, Admiral Fargo served on the Board of USAA, the last two of which he served as Chairman of the Board. USAA serves to facilitate the financial security of military members and their families by offering a full range of highly competitive financial products and services.

From 2011 to 2020, Admiral Fargo also served as Chairman of the Board of Huntington Ingalls Industries, a global engineering and defense technologies provider and America’s largest military shipbuilder.

Admiral Fargo became the Chairman of Hawaiian Electric Industries in May 2020. HEI is the parent company for Hawaiian Electric Company, American Savings Bank and Pacific Current. Additionally, Admiral Fargo serves on the Boards of Directors for Matson and is the lead director at The Greenbrier Companies.

Born in San Diego, CA, he attended high school in Coronado, CA, and Sasebo, Japan. Raised in a Navy family, both his father and step-father were United States Naval Academy graduates. Admiral Fargo graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June 1970, and has additional Governance, Business and Financial training from Harvard and Stanford Universities. He is a 1989 recipient of the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Award for Inspirational Leadership, and a 2013 recipient of the Naval Academy Distinguished Graduate Award. He remains active in the community and is the father of two grown sons. Admiral Fargo and his wife, Sarah, live in Honolulu, HI.
