The CPO pinning ceremony is a time-honored tradition in the Navy, celebrating the promotion of first-class petty officers to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO). The newest Chief Petty Officers in the National Capital Region are pinned with their anchors and commemorate this significant career milestone at the Navy Memorial. The rank of Chief Petty Officer was officially established on April 1, 1893. The Navy Memorial hosts an annual birthday celebration for Navy Chiefs to honor, recognize, and celebrate their fundamental role in the United States Navy.
