The United States Navy Memorial joins the nation in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Vice Admiral John B. Nowell, Jr., USN (Ret.), President and CEO of the U.S. Navy Memorial, issued the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a man who dedicated his life to serving the nation with unwavering commitment and exceptional service in the U.S. Navy and as the President of the United States.

President Carter credited his time in the Navy, especially as part of the submarine service, for shaping his leadership, discipline, and values, which in turn inspired a generation of sailors and millions of people around the world.

One of his lasting contributions came during his presidency when he authorized the construction of the United States Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. This memorial, home to the iconic Lone Sailor statue, the Granite Sea, and a world class Visitors Center stands as a testament to his enduring commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of our sea service members.

In 2005, the Navy commissioned the final Seawolf-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) in his honor. He was the only president to have qualified on submarines and the Seawolf is the only submarine named for a living president.

As we honor, recognize, and celebrate President Carter’s legacy and service, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
