Can we use best practices from Silicon Valley to compete and win on a global scale? Help us find the opportunities in the digital age to advance American sea power.

Moderated by the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, this Bridge Wing Chat will focus on digital (data management, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning) modernization. As the ideas and concepts for using this advanced technology are being discussed and debated by industry entrepreneurs and Navy leaders, and in war-fighting capability briefings and congressional hearings, this panel will dive into the current thinking and where the Navy should go in the future.

This event will be moderated by Admiral Bill Moran, Vice Chief of Naval Operations. The following panelists have been invited:

Nathana Sharma

Nathana O'Brien Sharma is Faculty at Singularity University, where she writes and speaks for international audiences on the future of technology, law and business. Nathana is policy lead and corporate counsel at Mobilecoin, Inc. a security focused blockchain based payments company. Nathana is General Counsel at Labelbox, one of the most exciting artificial intelligence startups in Silicon Valley today. She advises companies and governments on the application of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.

Nathana worked as an Intellectual Property Associate at Gunderson Dettmer, a leading emerging company and venture capital law firm. While at Gunderson Dettmer, Nathana helped a range of technology companies on data privacy and cyber security strategy. She has also worked at the Israeli Supreme Court and the Center for Creative Technologies.

Nathana is a JD/MBA graduate of Yale Law School and the Yale School of Management, as well as Singularity University's 2012 Graduate Studies Program.

Katie Rainey

Katie Rainey is a scientist at Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, a U.S. Navy research laboratory in San Diego, California.  Her research interests include AI robustness and machine learning algorithms for image recognition. Dr. Rainey is the general chair and co-founder of the workshop on Naval Applications of Machine Learning (NAML), the premier technical forum for machine learning research in the defense community, and is active in building the community of AI researchers among defense laboratories. She received her PhD in mathematics at UC Irvine in 2010.

Joshua Marcuse

Josh is the Executive Director of the Defense Innovation Board, a group of distinguished business and academic experts that advises the Secretary of Defense and DoD senior leaders on accelerating innovation in the Department's strategy, operations, technology, processes, personnel, and culture. He also serves as an advisor on innovation to the Deputy Chief Management Officer, focusing on building innovation capacity across the DoD workforce, and harnessing digital technologies such as data, cloud, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. He was previously the senior adviser for policy innovation in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, the Center for Strategic & International Studies, and the Council of Foreign Relations. Josh was a 2015 Next Generation National Security Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and is the founder of or advisor to several nonprofit organizations dedicated to promoting the next generation of global leaders. He is a term member of the Council in Foreign Relations. Josh is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and is certified in change management from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. He is a Gallup-trained executive coach and a LUMA-trained design thinking instructor and facilitator. He lives in Alexandria, VA with his wife and son.

Margaret Palmieri

Ms. Palmieri serves as the Director of the Navy Digital Warfare Office under the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare Systems (OPNAV N9). There she focuses on improving Navy capability through the use of data, analytics, and system integration. Ms. Palmieri has previously served as the Director of Integrated Fires and the Deputy Director of Decision Superiority under the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare (OPNAV N2N6), as the Director of the Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Actions Group (N00Z), and as a Presidential Management Fellow at U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

LCDR Rollie Wicks

Like the discussions that happen on bridge wings of Navy ships every day and night around the world, this event series is designed to bring together senior leadership and junior to mid-grade officers to discuss current topics of strategic interest. Generally beginning with a panel consisting of a senior officer and subject matter experts, the event actively engages an audience of naval enthusiasts in the discussion.  Following the discussion in the theater, the Navy Memorial hosts a reception for attendees to continue the conversation.
