Captin Martin Menez, USN (Retired)
CAPT Menez was commissioned in 1972 and served over seven years on active duty as a surface warfare officer. He held nine leadership positions in the operations, engineering, and weapons departments of USS Bausell (DD-845), USS Ouellet (FF-1077), and three shore stations. His varied tours were all outside the continental United States, based in Yokosuka, Japan; London, England; and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Captain Menez left active service in 1979 to attend Northwestern University's Kellogg School.
He was recalled to active duty in 1991 at CINCUSNAVEUR, London, in direct support of Operation Desert Storm.
Captain Menez returned to active duty in 1998 as Chief Information Officer for the Naval Reserve Force, first based in New Orleans, LA then Washington, DC. In 2002 he retired from Navy with 30 years of commissioned service. He was recalled from Navy retirement in 2005-6 to serve as Sea Warrior Requirements Director for Navy’s Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education. In 2012 he was appointed Chair of the Department of Naval Science and Senior Naval Science Instructor at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.
Captain Menez has had four reserve commands: two ship augmentation units (LPH-9, DDG-41), a Naval Activities UK unit in London, England, and a Military Sealift Command unit. His AT/ADT's have included courses at the Naval War and Armed Forces Staff Colleges, CINCLANTFLT Naval Reserve Senior Officer Orientation Course, leadership of Readiness Command policy boards, membership on promotion and CO/GCLO selection boards, and as liaison officer to the Mexican and Spanish forces.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit (two), Navy Commendation Medal (two), Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation (two), National Defense Service Medal (three), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (two), Vietnam Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (three), and Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with mobilization "M"). He is a member of the Naval War College Foundation, U.S. Naval Institute, Navy League (1995 men's council President in Mexico City), Naval Historical Foundation, and Associations: U.S. Navy, Surface Navy, Reserve Officers, and Military Officers of America. He was Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Asso. New Orleans President (1999). He is a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He is a Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer.
CAPT Menez currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Secretary of the Navy’s Retiree Council
